Pre-Requisites

Before you begin your journey into education with TC Training, it’s important that you understand our pre-requisite definition before you book a course.

Category 1:

The ACS assessments for first time Category 1 applications shall be relevant to the presented qualification unless additional evidence is presented to show that their work experience is relevant

Category 2:

Candidates will need to hold the relevant qualifications and provide written evidence to the assessment centre confirming that they have undertaken work experience and approved training for the range of assessments to be undertaken. That evidence shall include:

  • A written statement from a registered business detailing precisely the type, range & volume of gas work carried out

  • A certificate of achievement or written statement from the training provider where the gas training has been carried out or are undertaking a vocational qualification which has a requirement of gas work to be included, and where ACS certification is an integral part of that qualification or meet the relevant qualification requirements.

Additional Information

Applicants that do not satisfy the criteria of Category 1 or Category 2 shall be classified as a new entrant to the industry.

New Entrants

New entrants wishing to enter the gas industry after 1st October 2017 are required to complete a MLP which has been approved in accordance with the requirements of training specification, published & compliant to IGEM/IG/1. All MLP offered by recognisers of centres and trainers must provide a structured training and record onsite and offsite activities to support the pre-requisites in a portfolio of evidence. On successful completion of a NG/LPG training programme, a Certificate of Training will be provided. The titles listed in this document are abridged and may not reflect the exact wording on the certificate, qualification or MLP, and variations may exist. This will enable the candidate to undertake their designated ACS elements.

As from the 1st July 2020 this year Gas Safe and HSE require us to ask each gas engineer if they are competent in electrical safe isolation.

All gas operatives who enter or renew their ACS or GCS (or other recognised route), are required to have the technical knowledge and practical competence to safely undertake basic electrical safety checks.

Safe to touch, safe isolation and proving electrically dead is already covered by the training specifications for all new entrants into the gas industry.

Therefore, from July 2020 as a pre-requisite to ongoing assessments (ACS & GCS) registered engineers will be expected to have the technical knowledge or experience of safe electrical isolation which can be achieved by in-house training, external training or self-development.

The registered engineer will be expected to declare (self-validate) they have technical knowledge or experience of safe electrical isolation covered by the Industry best practice TB118 Safe Isolation, Safe to Touch & Proving Electrically Dead. Or if they feel they are not competent to undertake such checks, to make suitable arrangements to undertake training to enable safe working practices.

Employers also have a responsibility to ensure that their employees have the required skills and knowledge to allow them to work safely
