Course Content

As from 1st October 2018 to comply with IGEM/IG/1 under the instruction of Energy and Utility Skills & HSE all centres will have to comply with New Entrant requirements.

NEW MANAGED LEARNING PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS FOR NEW APPLICANTS.

The new entrant course for candidates looking to become a Gas Safe Registered engineer, but do not have the skills and knowledge must complete a MLP (Managed Learning Programme).

The UK Certification MLP (Managed Learning Programme), titled IGQ (Initial Gas Qualification) course is for new entrants and starts with the basic principles of HSE Legislations, basic electrical principles, gas heating, plumbing and pipework skills, gas appliances installation, service and maintenance.

This Managed Learning Programme is up to an eight week course in the centre and will cover all topics listed below which are broken down into sections each have a set competency level which must be achieved. Each section will be theory and practical based.

A managed learning programme certificate of competence will be awarded on successful completion of this course.

Applicants with some experience in one or more of the following sectors plumbing, heating, Oil, HVAC sectors.

In some cases APL (Accreditation to prior learning) could reduce the time in achieving the MLP certification. Please contact the centre for further information.

This needs to be supported by both qualifications held and a statement from your employer to support your APL application.

The new entrants managed learning gas course includes training and skills evaluation test in the following areas:

  • Introduction to mechanical installations.

  • Natural/Liquefied Petroleum gas.

  • Heating appliance/installation principles

  • Health and Safety including safe use of:

  • Hand/Electrical Tools.

  • Asbestos & legionella awareness.

  • Manual handling.

  • Fire safety precautions.

  • Electrical safety.

  • Pipework installation.

  • Measuring and interpretation of gas pressures/calculation of heat inputs to appliances.

  • Gas legislation, British Standards, Building Regulations and IGEM reference book.

  • IGEM/G/11 Industry unsafe situations procedures.

  • Tightness testing of Natural/LPG gas installations.

  • Gas appliance functions and the principle of operation of gas safety controls.

  • Principles of flues - chimneys and combustion.

  • Safe isolation of electrical installations.

Each candidate must complete a portfolio of work experience on site.

After successful completion of the MLP and completion of the on-site portfolio the candidate will be eligible to undertake ACS core and nominated appliances assessments.
